Description

CowParade West Harford 2003, Jane Lowerre

For Art, For Charity, For Fun

CowParade is the world’s largest public art event. From Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000 to Kansas City and Houston in 2001, followed by London in 2002, CowParade has continued to evolve in scale, creativity and artistic quality. Although the cow sculptures remain the same, artists in each city are challenged by previous events, inspired by their local culture and encouraged to offer their own interpretation of the cow as an art object.

CowParade is not intended to be high art. First and foremost, it is a public art exhibition that everyone can enjoy. Most importantly, CowParade benefits charity. At the end of each event, the cows are gathered and many are auctioned, with a substantial share of the proceeds donated to charitable organisations. The Chicago auction raised an impressive $3,000,000.00 for charity, including $1.4 million online and $2.1 million at the live auction held with Sotheby's. The average bid for the 140 cows was nearly $25,000, while the top cow, HANDsome, sold for $110,000. The CowParade New York 2000 Charity Auction raised an equally impressive $1,351,000.00 for several New York City charities. The highest winning bid was $ 60,000 for Tiffany Cow, and the average bid was $ 18,257.
